CHARLOTTE'S LOVIN...
A comic loved by all. I grew up reading the Beano and I LOVED it. I got my first insult from it, which was "shut your cake hole" - my mum was none too pleased!
I remember the mid-nineties and being able to get the Beano for 45p! So I popped down to WHSmith to investigate the Beano in 2012, and to my shock and horror, found it priced at a staggering £1.50! I thought, this had better be amazing, but I was met with disappointment.
However, there was one improvement and that was the better quality paper, but it just didn't hold the same charm as the old (cheaper) paper.
I was happy to see that the majority of characters were still in it, such as Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx (whose mum appears to have got younger!), The Bash Street Kids (who have stayed exactly the same), Rodger the Dodger and Ball Boy (which I was appalled to see had completely changed).
I also noticed that Bananaman had flown across from the Dandy, which confused me...
I must give the Beano credit though, for having such a good
website - it allows you to look back at Beano's from past decades and I especially like the sounds on the menu buttons.
One of my main memories of the Beano is going to Sainsbury's every Thursday with my Mum and one day noticing that the price was going up to 75p! I remember my Mum saying, "Ooo, not quite sure I can afford that every week".
I'm not sure if it was my sadness that won her over or me shouting at her and making a scene, either way she continued to buy the Beano for me and I'm a fan to this day.
